What to Wear to a Sangeet as a Guest

The sangeet is the most glamorous of the pre-wedding functions, so dress for it properly: an embellished lehenga, a sequinned Anarkali, or a sharara set in a jewel tone or a metallic. Pick something you can dance in for three hours — a securely fastened blouse, a pinned dupatta, and block heels or dressy flats rather than stilettos.

What should a guest wear to a sangeet?

A sangeet is a performance night. There is a stage, choreographed dances, a lot of standing, a lot of photography, and usually dinner afterwards. The dress code is the highest of all the pre-wedding events — this is the night for the outfit with the most work on it.

Strong choices:

• An embellished lehenga in a jewel tone: emerald, sapphire, wine, deep teal.

What should you wear if you are performing?

If you are in one of the dances, your outfit has an actual job to do. Run through this before you commit to it:

1. Try the choreography at home in the outfit, including the fast sections.
2. Pin the dupatta twice — at the shoulder and at the waist, not once and hopefully.
3. Choose a blouse with a hook or zip closure rather than a loose dori knot.
4. Skip long trails, dupattas draped over both arms, and sleeves that restrict your shoulders.
5. Wear the shoes you will perform in for at least an hour beforehand.
6. Carry double-sided tape, safety pins and a spare hair tie in your bag.
7. Wear jewellery that stays put: studs or well-hooked jhumkas, nothing that swings into your face.

What footwear works for a full night of dancing?

Block heels, wedges or embellished flats. A sangeet means three to four hours on your feet, much of it on marble or a temporary stage floor, so a stiletto is a poor idea however good it looks in the mirror.

If you want height, take a block heel of about two inches and break it in at home first. What jewellery finishes a sangeet look?

Pick one focal point. With a heavily embellished outfit, statement earrings and nothing else is usually plenty. With a plainer outfit — a simple sharara, a solid georgette Anarkali — add a layered neckpiece or a maang tikka to lift it.
