Fast delivery is an excellent solution to a problem you would rather not have. This guide is about recognising when you really have that problem, giving a rushed order its best chance of landing, and planning so you need it far less often.

How do you find out which speeds apply to your address?

Enter your delivery address at checkout and look at the options that appear. Serviceability is decided by address, so the list you see is specific to where the parcel is going — a friend in another city will not see the same set, and neither will you if you are sending something to your office instead of home.

Two things follow from that. First, fill the address in completely and correctly before you judge what is available; a misspelt city, a missing locality or a pincode that does not match the area is an easy way to see something different from what you expected. Second, treat the shipping policy as the reference for current areas, timings and charges. It is maintained; an article is only ever a snapshot.

What does a rushed order need from you?

A fast delivery has no spare time built into it, so everything that would normally be sorted out over a day has to be right the first time. Before you place it, check:

• House or flat number, floor, tower or block — not just the sector and the pincode.
• A landmark that a rider who does not know your lane can actually find.
• A phone number that will stay switched on and be answered all day.
• Someone at that address who is able to receive the parcel.
• Whether your society gate, office reception or building desk will accept a delivery on your behalf.
• The right address for the day: home if you will be home, office if you will be at work.

Sending a rushed parcel to an address nobody will be at is the most common way a fast delivery stops being fast.

When is the fastest option genuinely the right call?

The fastest speed is for orders where the date has already been decided for you and there is nothing left to rearrange.

When should you not rely on speed alone?

The weakness of a fast delivery is that it removes your margin. If the piece arrives and the fit is wrong, you have nothing left, because the entire plan assumed it would be right. So the fastest option is a sound answer when you are re-buying something whose fit you already know, and a risky one when you are trying a silhouette or a size for the first time.

It is also the wrong tool for an outfit that may need altering. A hem to be shortened or a waist to be taken in needs days at the tailor, and those are days you cannot buy at checkout.

What can slow an order down whatever speed you choose?

Some of this is weather and some is arithmetic, but most of it is fixable before you pay.

• A phone that is unreachable when the rider calls.
• A locked flat, or a society or office that will not accept parcels on your behalf.
• Public holidays and festive weeks, when every courier is at its heaviest load of the year.

What if the piece does not fit?

1. Write down the season's functions at the start of the month — weddings, festivals, office events.
2. Decide what you will wear to each while there is still time to change your mind.
3. Order the pieces together and early, rather than one panicked order per occasion.
4. Try each one on the day it arrives, with the shoes, and exchange immediately if it is wrong.
