How to Avoid Visible Panty Lines Under a Fitted Dress

Visible lines under a fitted dress come from one of two things: an edge that creates a ridge, or a colour that shows through. They are different problems with different solutions, and knowing which one you have saves a lot of trial and error.
First, work out which problem you have
A ridge is a raised line you can see in the surface of the fabric, usually across the back of the thigh or the hip. It is caused by an elastic edge pressing into skin and the fabric following that contour.
Show-through is a colour difference visible through thin or pale fabric, with no ridge. The underwear is the wrong colour, or the dress is too sheer.
A dress can have both. Fixing one will not fix the other.
Fixing the ridge
Seamless underwear. Laser-cut or bonded edges with no stitched hem, so there is nothing to press in. This is the first thing to try and it solves most cases on its own. Look for "laser cut", "seamless" or "no show" in the description.
Go up a size. Tight elastic digs in harder and creates a deeper ridge. Underwear that fits without compressing leaves far less of a mark. This is the most commonly overlooked fix.
A thong. Effective at removing the leg-opening line entirely, and plenty of people find it uncomfortable. It is one option, not the only one.
Boyshorts or cycling-style shorts. The leg edge sits lower on the thigh where the dress is often looser, and the longer leg distributes pressure over a wider area rather than cutting a line.
High-waisted smoothing briefs. These remove both the waistband line and the leg line if the leg is long enough, and give a smoother surface overall.
Fixing show-through
Match to skin, not to the dress. Underwear close to your own skin tone disappears under light fabric. White underwear under a white or pale dress shows clearly, because white sits on top of skin tone rather than blending with it. This is the single most common mistake.
Check in daylight before leaving. Indoor lighting hides a lot. Daylight and camera flash do not. Look in a mirror near a window, and bend forward — fabric stretches differently when you move.
Add a slip. A thin slip in a skin-close colour solves show-through completely and also helps the dress hang better. For a sheer or pale dress this is more reliable than any underwear choice.
By dress type
| Dress | What usually works |
|---|---|
| Thin jersey bodycon | Seamless high-waist brief or shorts, skin-tone |
| Satin / silk | Seamless shorts plus a slip — satin shows everything |
| Lined crepe or ponte | Ordinary seamless underwear is usually enough |
| White or pale cotton | Skin-tone seamless plus, if sheer, a slip |
| Knit midi | Boyshorts, since the hem sits where the dress is looser |
Satin deserves a specific warning. It is the least forgiving fabric for this, because the sheen highlights every contour. A lined satin dress is a different proposition from an unlined one.
Shapewear, used properly
Smoothing shorts do solve lines, and in Indian heat the practical considerations matter:
- Choose breathable knit over heavy compression panels for a long day
- A size too small creates its own ridges at the hem and waistband, defeating the purpose
- Longer legs distribute pressure better than short ones
- Check the hem edge — a thick band at mid-thigh can be more visible than ordinary underwear
Shapewear smooths a line under a dress that already fits. It cannot rescue a dress that is a size too small.
What to check before you leave
- Look in daylight, not just indoor light
- Turn around and check the back in a second mirror
- Sit down and stand up again, then look once more
- Walk a few steps — some lines only appear in movement
The structural fix
If one particular dress shows lines no matter what you wear, the dress is the problem: it is unlined, in thin fabric, in a pale colour. A slip solves it permanently. Buying lined dresses in the first place avoids it.
Our dresses state whether a piece is lined on every product page, which is the detail that predicts this before you buy.
The short version
Work out whether you have a ridge or show-through. For ridges, go seamless and go up a size. For show-through, match your skin tone rather than the dress, and add a slip. Check in daylight, sitting and standing.
Common Questions
No. Seamless laser-cut briefs, boyshorts or high-waisted smoothing shorts all remove the line without the discomfort many people find with thongs. Going up a size in ordinary seamless underwear also helps a great deal, because tight elastic is what creates the deepest ridge.
